Unable to restore Copilot Pro after failed renewal payment during signup pause #196137
🏷️ Discussion TypeQuestion 💬 Feature/Topic AreaCopilot in GitHub BodyHi GitHub Community, My GitHub Copilot Pro subscription was active, but the renewal payment failed because of a payment method issue. I have already updated my payment method with a valid card, but I can’t restore or reactivate Copilot Pro. The billing page appears to treat the reactivation as a new subscription. Since new Copilot Pro and Copilot Pro+ sign-ups are temporarily paused, I’m currently unable to subscribe again, even though I was already an existing Copilot Pro user before the failed renewal. This cancellation was not intentional. It only happened because the renewal payment failed. Has anyone in the same situation been able to restore Copilot Pro, or received any confirmed solution from GitHub Billing Support? I would appreciate any guidance or official clarification. Thank you. |

GitHub temporarily paused new Copilot Pro / Pro+ sign-ups, the system may also be blocking:
Normally, when a renewal payment fails:
The problem is that the current signup freeze appears to affect even previous subscribers whose plans ended unintentionally due to billing failure. At the moment, there are only a few possible outcomes:
What strengthens your case:
Realistically, only GitHub Billing Support can fix this because community moderators and normal users cannot override subscription state flags. You should specifically ask support for:
That wording matters because internally those are often different workflows. Also, if you still have:
At the moment, there is no confirmed public self-service fix for this issue. Multiple users affected during the signup pause are reporting similar behavior where the system incorrectly routes them into the blocked “new signup” flow instead of restoring prior subscriptions. |

I am not able to restore my copilot pro+ subscription. it says payment was rejected but i have plenty of money in the account so is VERY suspicious |

That is kidding... i was working in my project when i got cancelled due a Billing Issue. Now i can't return to Copilot Pro cuz the billing service is cosidering my subscription as a new subscription. |

I also missed the payment after the autupay failed. Please restor my subscription. |

Hi @waleedelsefy, You’re not alone in this situation. From what several users have reported, when a Copilot Pro renewal payment fails, GitHub may automatically cancel the subscription instead of keeping it in a recoverable “past due” state. Because GitHub has temporarily paused new Copilot Pro / Pro+ sign-ups, the system currently treats reactivation as a completely new subscription, which unfortunately blocks affected existing users from restoring access directly through the billing page. At the moment, the best option is to contact GitHub Billing Support directly and explain that:
Some users have mentioned that support may be able to manually review or restore affected accounts depending on eligibility and account status. You can contact support here: Hopefully GitHub provides clearer guidance or a dedicated recovery flow for existing subscribers affected by failed renewals during the signup pause. Good luck, and please update the thread if you receive a resolution from support. |

My active Copilot Pro subscription was automatically canceled after a billing failure via PayPal, even though the underlying card is fully active and funded. Now that I've updated my payment details, the billing dashboard is completely broken: the "Pay Now" option is entirely missing, and the Copilot Pro tier has vanished from my settings. The system is incorrectly routing my renewal recovery into the blocked "new enrollment" flow due to the current signup freeze. I opened a support ticket regarding this two weeks ago and have received absolutely no response. It seems previous paying subscribers caught in this specific automated billing loop are being entirely neglected by the automated system and support queues. Can a community manager or GitHub staff member please escalate this? Standard users cannot override these backend account state flags. |

i have same issue. Has anyone received a response? |
|
same issue trying to get access from month ive started on Microsoft cause iam using VS and zero answers. Now they wrote to bump here. They just cut solo developers that how things work to not allow them to make concurent buisnesses. They wrote they will bring back PRO plans in June and now they wrote you can bump Pro to Pro+ - but spoiler you cant go from free to pro cause they cut everyone who could get access and not own company . Freetier is a comedy demo |

I have the same problem. I've been using the subscription for a long time, but I ended up with one incorrect payment and the subscription is completely gone. Support hasn't responded for over a month. I've created new tickets, and still no luck. Are there any solutions to this problem? Or alternatives that can be used in VS Code? Support tickets: |

I also missed the payment after the autupay failed. Please restor my subscription. |

I'm in the same situation. It's been over two weeks and I still haven't received any response. please restore my subscription |

im in the same issue is there any way to restore my subscription ? |

I am having the same problem, is there any solution yet? |

For those looking for an equivalent tool to use in VS Code, give the Claude extension a try. At first, it's kind of weird, but it does the same thing, and I'd even say it's better. It lacks some integrations with the IDE itself, but it gets the job done. The only reason I'd consider subscribing to Copilot Pro again is the autocomplete/inline suggestions feature. Claude doesn't have that, and it was really good. |
|
Hey, A few people in similar situations have had it restored through support, but it seems to depend on how the ticket is handled, so be persistent if the first response doesn't resolve it. |
|
The part that's becoming impossible to ignore is that nobody appears willing to answer the actual questions being asked. I've provided screenshots. In return I've received multiple policy explanations, product announcements, subscription FAQs, and "we're looking into it" responses. At no point has GitHub addressed the core request: • What were the account billing settings before the changes? Every response seems focused on explaining GitHub's policies in general rather than explaining what happened on my account specifically. If a regulator, auditor, bank investigator, or consumer affairs officer reviewed this ticket tomorrow, they would see a customer repeatedly asking for evidence and account records while support repeatedly provides policy summaries and delay notices. At some point "we're looking into it" stops being an update and starts becoming the issue itself. The irony is that resolving the complaint would probably take less time than generating another copy-paste response explaining why nobody can answer it. |

This is the giant hammer. If: account showed "Free" Then the question becomes: What overall impression was created? Australian courts look at the overall impression on an ordinary consumer. Not what a GitHub lawyer can explain afterwards. Not what a support agent says 5 weeks later. Not what was hidden in paragraph 47 subsection 9. The impression at the time. Australian consumer law doesn't just look at whether something was technically written somewhere. Courts look at: transparency Buried disclosures are much weaker than obvious disclosures. If a feature behaves in a way that many consumers would not reasonably expect, that can become relevant. |

As a long-time GitHub user and developer of nearly 10 years, I sincerely hope the GitHub team and the community will pay more attention to the difficulties currently faced by existing Copilot Pro+ users. I understand that the past year has been challenging. The explosive growth of AI usage has likely placed enormous pressure on infrastructure, GPU capacity, and operating budgets. I understand why GitHub may have needed to pause new subscriptions or introduce temporary restrictions. However, existing users should not bear the consequences of these limitations by unexpectedly losing access to services they had already been granted or had already paid for. Many of us are not trying to obtain new benefits. We are simply asking for the restoration of entitlements that we legitimately had before — whether through paid subscriptions, maintainer programs, or previous Copilot plans. In my own case, I had Copilot Pro access as an open source maintainer, later upgraded to Copilot Pro+, and after a subscription transition issue, my account was downgraded directly to Copilot Free. The most frustrating part was not the technical issue itself, but the feeling that there was no self-service recovery path and that long-time users were treated the same as new sign-ups. Open source maintainers and veteran developers contribute countless hours to the ecosystem that GitHub thrives on. When access is suddenly revoked without clear explanations, transparent recovery options, or timely support, it disrupts development plans and affects the communities that depend on our projects. I respectfully ask GitHub to consider the following:
This is not a request for special treatment. It is a request for fairness, continuity, and respect for the trust that long-time users have placed in the GitHub ecosystem. I hope GitHub can address these cases more proactively and help restore confidence among its developer community. |

I agree, ironic part is the prices these days we may as well go local, 1
mil context soon hopefully... I liked the subs but for the prices ngl
copilot etc isn't worth it... It's like paying top dollar for a got4 with
tools 🤔

And for the record, what your explaining is 100% why consumer laws exist,
the impact and couldn't rectify etc and no matter how they word it with
policy I can bet you my life a court does not see it like that.

I have already contacted GitHub Legal separately. This ticket still needs
to be handled properly by someone who can review the account-specific
billing facts, not just repeat policy.
The laws I am raising are:
ACL s18 = misleading or deceptive conduct
ACL s29 = misleading representations about price/services
ACL s23/s24 = unfair or insufficiently transparent contract terms
The issue is not simply whether usage occurred. The issue is whether GitHub
clearly disclosed and obtained informed consent for additional paid usage
where the account/subscription state, payment failure handling, budget
behaviour, and Free / $0 presentation appear contradictory.

I completely agree with @Mynuggets-dev <https://github.com/Mynuggets-dev>.
What we are witnessing here goes far beyond a simple "billing glitch."
GitHub is not only downgrading our accounts, but also unlawfully retaining
our subscription fees while completely failing to provide the paid
services. This is a severe infringement on our consumer rights and a
blatant breach of contract.
We must stand together and push back against this arrogant behavior. It is
painfully obvious that Copilot no longer cares about individual users; they
are trampling on our rights at will. Copilot is simply not what it used to
be—it has fundamentally changed for the worse. We shouldn't just accept
this as normal.

Only GitHub Billing Support can determine whether a previously active Copilot Pro subscription can be restored after a failed renewal. Community members do not have access to subscription or billing records. If updating your payment method causes GitHub to treat the action as a new subscription and new sign-ups are currently paused, you will need to contact GitHub Billing Support and explain that your subscription lapsed due to a failed renewal payment rather than an intentional cancellation. GitHub Support can review your account history and advise whether reactivation is possible or whether you must wait until new subscriptions become available again. |

I just checked in this morning and see that I am (finally) able to restart my copilot pro+ subscription. Hopefully others can as well. |

Hi there,
Thank you for reaching out, and I’m sorry for the inconvenience this caused. I understand how important it is to regain access, especially when this was due to a payment issue rather than an intentional cancellation.
After reviewing your account, I can confirm that your Copilot Pro+ subscription renewal attempt on May 17, 2026 was unsuccessful due to a payment failure. The transaction was declined because the card did not have sufficient funds at the time.
Because the renewal could not be completed, the subscription was automatically canceled and your account was downgraded to Copilot Free.
I understand that you’ve now updated you…
