Projects not sending invite notifications or showing in Projects tab #55148

There could be several reasons why the invited user is not receiving notifications or having the project appear on their profile. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try: 1- Check the user's notification settings: The invited user may have turned off email or web notifications from GitHub. Ask them to check their notification settings and ensure that they are set up to receive notifications for the types of events they want to be notified about. 2- Confirm the user's email address: Make sure that the email address associated with the user's GitHub account is correct and that it is not being filtered or blocked by their email provider. 3- Verify the invitation was sent: Double-check that you sent the invitation to the correct username or email address and that it was not accidentally sent to the wrong person. 4- Check the user's GitHub account status: If the user's account has been flagged or suspended by GitHub for any reason, they may not be able to receive notifications or access certain features. If none of these steps resolve the issue, you can try reaching out to GitHub support for further assistance. |

Same issue for me. None of the steps above resolves the issue. |
I have the same issue. That also comes with not being able to mention invited user in the comment and/or assign tasks to them - probably because they didn't accept the invitation. Me and my co-worker tested it both ways, i created a project and invited him but also he created one and invited me and none of us received any sort of invitation notification. |
Same issue for me also not sending any invite to the users |
similar issue for me |
I am also facing the exact same issue -- "When I invite someone to a project they do not get a notification and theres no way to tell the have access to the project other than manually navigating to the project on another user's profile". However, I am able to assign tasks to the invited members. |

Since May 2023 and no response here, the issue is still present... |
Same issue here. New user joined GitHub recently and receives no notification when I add them, regardless of access granted. None of the solutions suggested apply. |
Yes same issue. They also don't have access, |
Same issue, just discovered Github Projects and can't event use it |
Same issue |
For me, I tried to add the user to the project (a user outside the organization) and not found when i put the email on the input field. The button Invite doesn't do anything. |
Same issue, this is quite embarrassing for GitHub that such a simple notification feature is not working. I have added 4 collaborators with Role:Write to the Project and no one has received any notifications. |
Same issue for me also not sending any invite to the user, and if the user click the invite url ,it says 404 |
Same issue happens to me also; Tried several times but it seems not working. |
I am also facing the same issue |
I Solved it you need to add them to the repository first then add them to the project |
I had the same issue. Apparently, we must link one single repository to the project! then we should add collaborators to both the repository and the project. |

This is still a bug, GitHub! Where you at? The "solutions" above are lackluster work-arounds. Why don't you just send the notification when we request it? Or remove the option and tell us how we're supposed to do this in the docs. The only "prerequisite" mentioned in the docs is, "You can only invite an individual user to collaborate on your organization-level project if they are already a member of the organization or an outside collaborator on at least one repository in the organization." (https://docs.github.com/en/issues/planning-and-tracking-with-projects/managing-your-project/managing-access-to-your-projects#managing-access-for-user-level-projects) Well, it sounded like most of the commenters before me made sure of that requirement first. But okay, maybe it's a user-level project, so it behaves by different rules. First of all, is there even a flag or anything that helps a user know if a Project is Organization- or User-Level? Nevertheless, it basically says the same thing for user-level projects: "To view an item on the project, someone must have the required permissions for the repository that the item belongs to. Only people with access to a private repository will be able to view project items from that private repository." The method outlined in the docs simply doesn't work, and this has been an issue for almost two years now. I think it's time to check out GitLab. |

Still an issue |

When? Just adding Collaborator to repo does not work. It identifies the user, but adding just flashes and not invited to invite list. The person I am trying to add is in Pakistan, any possibility of geo restriction? Emai @ gmail.com and adding as username same problem. Other emails can be added |
Guys, I got into this frustrating situation in 2025. After reading and finding nothing to fix - I made another private repo on my account and added a user. this time it worked. then i went to my old repo and started adding - it worked! so create another repo with same settings. then add a few people. if they are getting the notifications - then try it on your old repo - should fix the problem. |

Still an issue. |

When I invite someone to a project they do not get a notification and theres no way to tell the have access to the project other than manually navigating to the project on another user's profile. Have tried with either user being the project creator.
Expected behaviour:
When a user is invited to a project they should be notified.
It should also display on their profile under the projects tab
Further info:
Both accounts are personal accounts
